GET TO KNOW YOUR COACH – MATT

1. What brought you to CFS?
I started Crossfit while I was in college at Syracuse and naturally I was addicted. So looking to continue getting my fix one of my fraternity brothers from school, who was from Stamford, brought me for the first time. That was two summers ago and I have to say there is no place like CFS.

7. What is your biggest first world problem?
When that hunger pang hits just moments after having brushed my teeth.

8. What is your favorite meal, in detail?
Loaded Nachos and I mean LOADED. Large homemade tortilla chips on the bottom, triple mexican cheese blend, jalapenos, followed by beef and shredded pork, next up melted cheese. Then comes the guac and more guac and more guac, the dollop of sour cream and mango salsa, and finished off with some fresh shredded cheddar, cilantro and lime juice.

Yeah I’ve made this once or twice….

9. If you had $1 million, what would you spend it on? Give details!

10. What are you most grateful for?
The truly amazing group of people I have in my life that support me in so many ways that I cannot even put into words.. That includes all of the friends I have made during my time at CFS. You were all my first family when I moved here knowing nothing and no one. You all are the reason I decided to become a Coach, so that I could give back whatever I could to CFS.

See you all at the “BAR”.

GET TO KNOW YOUR COACH – MELISSA

1. What brought you to CFS?
My best friend from high school needed a workout buddy to help get in shape for her wedding. She found CFS and I tagged along for our October 2010 on ramp and have been here ever since!!

2. What 1 thing would you like members to know.
Hmmmmm…. I was named after the song “Sweet Melissa” by the Almond Brothers Band. Describes me perfectly, I know 😉

3. What PR are you most proud of? What is your next PR goal?
It’s a tie between my first ring muscle-up (first CFS lady to get one, no big deal) and consuming 8 slices of pizza during last year’s pizza WOD (most slices ever eaten by a female, also no big deal).

4. If you could have anyone coach you through a WOD, who would it be?
Charles Barkley. He was my favorite basketball player back in the day, and I was pumped when he got into CrossFit. Seriously…how can you say no to Sir Charles pushing you through a WOD???

5. What were you like in high school?
Part nerd, part fun-loving ghetto girl. I was in all Honors and AP classes, but enjoyed listening to the Notorious BIG and drinking Private Stock 40s on the weekends with my Waterbury peeps.

6. What movie as a kid scarred you the most?
I LOVED scary movies as a kid, especially Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th and all Stephen King movies. I think the original Poltergeist scared me the most.

7. What is your biggest first world problem?
Waiting for my nails to dry after a mani/pedi. I ALWAYS smudge them because I get bored sitting there and don’t let them dry properly. The struggle is real.

8. What is your favorite meal, in detail?
I’m just gonna mix and match some of my faves…

Drink: Bottle of Cabernet
Appetizers: Meat and cheese board from Amore and fried meatballs from Fortina
Entree: Lasagna from Cafe Silvium (with extra sauce and their fresh bread for dipping of course)
Dessert: Tiramisu also from Cafe Silvium
After Dinner Drink: Espresso martini from Prime
Late Night Snack: Pepperoni pizza from Domenick and Pia’s (best pizza in CT, located in Waterbury)

9. If you had $1 million, what would you spend it on? Give details!
I’d have to be responsible and pay off my student loans. Then hook up my mom and gramps with a new house, hook up myself with a house, pay for my wedding, and put some away for my future kids’ college fund. Then I’d travel the world with my fiancé until we ran out of money and had to come home. I might need more than $1 million…

10. What are you most grateful for?
SO MUCH! Every day I get to wake up next to the love of my life, fulfill my calling as a kindergarten teacher, and workout with great friends at an awesome gym!!! I am most grateful to have my health, a supportive family, my fiancé who loves me just as I am, and amazing life-long friends.

3. What PR are you most proud of? What is your next PR goal?
Personal record I’m most proud of I’m going to have to say when I cut weight for my first powerlifting meet I have never done that before and I had the whole gym giving me tips and support, it was so hard and terrible so much so that when I want to weigh in I had to get completely undressed to make weight and I think that’s my favorite one and my next one will be a 405 front squat that will be nice

4. If you could have anyone coach you through a WOD, who would it be?
Well let’s see to coach me through a work out I do have to say Jocko Willink I think he would push my face through the ground then maybe Ben Bergeron but who knows he might just keep his mouth shut and not say anything but he’d have a lot of cool tips I think above all else I would take Coach NickD That guy knows me the most and knows how to really take me to the dark place and keep me there

5. What were you like in high school?
Well I had a different high school experience I graduated online because I was playing hockey out of state and for my whole high school career I was living with Four 21 year-olds so basically I was the Christmas party WOO five nights a week

6. What movie as a kid scarred you the most?
No movie ever really got to me BUT Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark those books made me really freak out

7. What is your biggest first world problem?

GET TO KNOW YOUR COACH – JARI

1. What brought you to CFS?
I joined CrossFit Stamford in January of 2015 together with my dad. Fall sports had just ended (I played soccer) and so I needed something else to do, and after seeing some videos of the CrossFit Games online I was excited to get started.

2. What 1 thing would you like members to know.
I’m a drummer and I loving playing the drums. And while I don’t play nearly as much as I used to, it’s almost like meditation.

3. What PR are you most proud of? What is your next PR goal?
The PR I am most proud of is finishing 44th in the world and 2nd in the north east for the teenage boys 16-17 division in the Open this year. My next PR goal is to be able to hold a freestanding handstand for 15 seconds.

4. If you could have anyone coach you through a WOD, who would it be?
It would be my grandfather, Piet (or in Dutch we’d call him “Opa Piet”). He’s one of my best friends.

5. What were you like in high school?
I’m actually currently still in high school, so I guess mostly who I am now.

6. What movie as a kid scarred you the most?
The fourth Harry Potter movie (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire)–mostly because “he who must not be named” comes back to life at the end.

7. What is your biggest first world problem?
My biggest first world problem is definitely having cars honk at me to go faster as I’m biking home from the gym, because they’re afraid to go around. I understand they’ve got places to go, but at the same time I don’t have a booster button on my bicycle :).

8. What is your favorite meal, in detail?
My favorite meal is Singaporean-style fried rice. In Singapore they have these places called food courts, where for an incredibly small amount of money you can get some of the most best food in the country, and the fried rice from these food courts is delicious.

9. If you had $1 million, what would you spend it on? Give details!
I would spend an extended amount of time (how long exactly I don’t know) traveling the world, with the least amount of material possessions as possible so that I can learn and take in as much as possible.

10. What are you most grateful for?
I am incredibly grateful for my family (my mom, dad and three younger brothers, and my grandparents, and uncles–the whole bunch).

GET TO KNOW YOUR COACH – GARRETT

1. What brought you to CFS?
A college friend, who apparently knew me very well. He had just started CrossFit at another gym in Connecticut and urged me to follow suit. I blindly followed.

2. What 1 thing would you like members to know.
I may often look very serious, but I’m actually really goofy once you get to know me.

3. What PR are you most proud of? What is your next PR goal?
7 years of consecutive CrossFit. Consistency is key. I’ve always really enjoyed running. My next PR goal would be to run a sub 5 minute mile and deadlift over 500 lbs within the same week.

4. If you could have anyone coach you through a WOD, who would it be?
I think Denzel Washington would be an awesome motivational speaker. I just need a good pre-WOD speech and some rock music. I don’t necessarily need someone by my side for an entire workout since I typically black-out within the first couple of minutes anyway.

5. What were you like in high school?
Very different. I’m still a huge nerd at heart. I’ve watched the original Starwars Trilogy more times than I can count and still have all my vintage video games systems stored in my apartment. I’ve attached a high school picture for your enjoyment.

6. What movie as a kid scarred you the most?
Hands down Jurassic park. Specifically, the scene were the raptor burst through the pipes as power was restored to the park. I’ll still check my closet twice every night before bed to make sure there are no raptors hiding behind my clothes.

7. What is your biggest first world problem?
Definitely when you don’t put the lid on your Starbucks hot coffee tight enough and you go to take the first sip and it spills everywhere.

8. What is your favorite meal, in detail?
Thanksgiving. Its not that the food is the best, but a whole day dedicated to stuffing your facing and drinking with family never disappoints. Not to mention it is always acceptable to take an afternoon nap.

9. If you had $1 million, what would you spend it on? Give details!
Trick question, I would have to invest it. My runner up would be to take a year off and travel the world. I have an ever growing list of mountains to snowboard and beaches to surf.

10. What are you most grateful for?
My family and friends, which includes those of you reading this. Special shout-outs to Erica, my fiancé, my furbaby Riley and sister Brittany (photographs attached). Honestly, though I think we should all just be really grateful we live currently live in a place that offers us so much opportunity and that provides us safety and much more than the essentials we need to survive.
