This month’s recipient is Adam K.

How long have you been CrossFitting? 1 1/2 years.

Why did you join CrossFit Stamford?  I had been doing Krav Maga for a few months.  My conditioning was poor and the extra cardio I was doing wasn’t helping enough.  I needed something better and had heard about CrossFit through some former military friends.  I did some Google searching, watched a few videos, and thought it looked pretty easy (oops!).  I showed up for On Ramp and never looked back.

What is your favorite movement?  I can’t decide between double unders and overhead squats.  Because I struggled with both movements for awhile, finally achieving a modest level of proficiency has made them more fun to do.

What is your least favorite movement?  Thrusters!!!  My rack position flexibility, while improved, still sucks.  Doing thrusters makes me want to stab myself in the eye with a pencil.  So I do my best not to miss the WODs that include them, then I quietly (sometimes not so quietly) curse Greg Glassman for inventing “Fran”.

What is the best thing about CrossFit Stamford?  The members and the coaches.  I still remember how helpful all the members were when I first started and I’m constantly surprised by how many good, fun, and hard working people I meet at the gym.  I also really like the coaches.  They have always been knowledgeable, supportive and generous with their time, especially when I ask all of my PITA questions.  I dig the programming too.  The WODs are never boring and I continue to make gains and hit PRs.

Most memorable moment?  I have a bunch of personal memories of getting my first muscle up, putting together my first long string of DUs, and finally doing well in a WOD with overhead squats.  But I think my favorite overall experience was judging one of the in-house competitions. Seeing up close how much effort people put in all day long was really inspiring.

What are your fitness goals 3 months & 1 year from now?  Over the next three months I am going to make thrusters one of my new favorite movements and will work harder to improve my metcon.  Within the next year I’d like to snatch my bodyweight (which is partly a weight loss goal), enter my first competition, and wrap up some of my residual 2011 goals.

What are your favorite Paleo & non Paleo foods?  If I don’t keep Paleo simple, I won’t stick to it, so my favorites are basics like steak, spinach, and baked sweet potatoes.  My favorite non-Paleo foods are pizza, Wendy’s Spicy Chicken sandwiches, and some good homemade pierogi.

What advice would you give a potential new member?  If you are already working out 2-3 times a week, you are doing yourself a disservice by not trying CrossFit.  If you are one of those people that wants to work out but has trouble sticking to a program, the group/class element of CrossFit should go a long way towards fixing that.

What do you think of Rob’s beard?  I think he wears it as a disguise so that people don’t recognize as the stunt double for JCVD in “Bloodsport”.

Tell us something we don’t know about you.  My childhood athletic heroes were Bob Beamon and Carl Lewis, and my hair is really just a well crafted wig.

How long have you been CrossFitting?

It has been a little over a year now

Why did you join CrossFit Stamford?

I was looking for something different…something that would hold my interest. I had done p90x and  had been boxing for a little while, but then I changed jobs and so I had to change gyms. A friend of mine in Miami kept telling me about CrossFit so I looked online and saw there was one 5 minutes from my apt and decided to give it a try (although I still managed to get lost on my first day of on ramp…not unusual for me!)

 What is your favorite movement?

burpees..and I don’t know why

What is your least favorite movement?

it’s a tie between wall balls and box jumps- hate ’em both equally

What is the best thing about CrossFit Stamford?

the people…sometimes I walk in there so unmotivated or drained from a hard day, but the energy of the people around me is contagious and I always end up feeling better by the time I leave

Most memorable moment?

I have 2: my most “proud” moment is when I FINALLY (after a year) got a kipping pull-up without a band…

the “funniest” moment had to be during one of the last WODs before we moved to the new gym..we were doing an AMRAP with thrusters and HJ over the bar and as I threw down my bar it bounced sideways and put a hole..a completely perfect circle… right into the wall… I was mortified but my coach yelled to keep going and I managed to get a few more HJ’s in before the clock stopped..

What are your fitness goals 3 months & 1 year from now?

in 3 months I would like to be able to string together my kipping pull-ups and TTB..By next year I would like to finally break my  power clean PR..I have been stuck at 110 for months now, not because it is too heavy but because I can’t drop under the bar…I really want to get that down.

What are your favorite Paleo & non Paleo foods?

paleo: I’ve been making this frittata with kale, mushrooms and sundried tomatoes. I make it on Sunday and have it for breakfast every morning- so good!

non-paleo: a good cocktail…or dark chocolate, not necessarily at the same time

What advice would you give a potential new member?

I think the biggest thing is not to think too much, you are there for your own self improvement- that is it-  so when you see a WOD that you are completely dreading…that is when you should be going!

What do you think of Rob’s beard?

I think he is channeling wolverine..which is appropriate since he kindof has super human strength.

Tell us something we don’t know about you.

I am a closet dork, and I know far too many useless, random facts for it to be normal.

AND THE DO WORK AWARD GOES TO…MIKE LOMBARDI!

This month’s winner of the DO WORK Award is Mike Lombardi!!

How long have you been Crossfitting? 1.5 years

Why did you join CrossFit Stamford? I started out on my own at the regular globo gym but soon realized I needed help and once I joined I was hooked.

What is your favorite movement? Overhead Squat

What is your least favorite movement? Burpees and rowing are a tie!

What is the best thing about CrossFit Stamford? The people! I love how we all try to help each other to get better.  It motivates me to come in and do the work

Most memorable moment? I have three. The first being my first wod which was a partner wod. I tried to keep up and it almost killed me. I thought I was in pretty descent shape and it blew me away.  Made me come back for more.  The second was when Andrew M was in the middle of a wod and jumped directly on the hj’s pvc pipe stand and shattered the entire thing into little pcs.  The third was the last in house competition.   Durring the snatch wod I see Brain who was right next to me, from the corner of my eye, swaying back and forth with the wieght over his head….classic!

What are your fitness goals 3 months and 1 year from now?  My goal is to make sure I keep showing up and put in the effort each time.   I also try to pick 1 to 2 goat exercises and focus in on it for 6-8weeks at a time and practice it after the wod if I can or shall I say if I have anything left in the tank.

What are your favorite Paleo and non-Paleo foods? Steak and ice cream.

What advice would you give a potential new member? It is hard but keep coming and you will see the results.  Try to listen to your body, if it is tired give it a rest.

What do you think of Rob’s beard? It gives him his super strength and makes him really cool!

Tell us something we don’t know about you. I have a german shepard dog named Hanna, she is 8 years old.  She is my third love behind my wife and two boys.  They are just great dogs.

How long have you been CrossFitting?  In total I’ve been CrossFitting for about 18 months – although that’s spread out between when I first started at Crossfit Stamford in June of ’09 and now.

Why did you join CrossFit Stamford?  I was looking for something different, a program that was challenging and engaging.  I was an athlete in college, and really thrive on the competition and community aspect of being on a team.  And frankly, running got really boring.  I tried Crossfit and it was really really challenging, which was frustrating at first, but everyone was very welcoming and wanted me to do well, which was really motivating.

What is your favorite movement?  It changes – I really like bodyweight movements though – wall balls, squats, pushups, pullups, etc.  More than anything else, there’s a more noticable/ tangible impovement.  Recently, I’ve been working on my pistols.

What is your least favorite movement?  Hand-stand push-ups!

What is the best thing about CrossFit Stamford?  The community.  The people next to you are pushing you and supporting you at the same time, and while we’re always competing in the gym, we still want each other to do well.

Most memorable moment?  My first-ever WOD.  It was a timed circuit that included a run, pull-ups, and something else.  I was last by far, and was having trouble with my last set of pull-ups, which I was using a green band for.  As most people started filing out, I remember Kristie and Sans cheering me on until I got the last couple of reps. That was a long time ago…

What are your fitness goals 3 months & 1 year from now?  In 3 months, I’d really like to make it to 1 Abmat for handstand push-ups.  In a year, I’d like to be focusing on muscle-ups.  I’ve got a long way to go to be able to do one.

What are your favorite Paleo & non Paleo foods?  I started making this egg casserole once a week – scramble up 8-10 eggs, and add sausage and a ton of veggies – usually mushrooms, spinach, and onions, and bake in an 8×8 dish.  It’s delicious, easy, and is breakfast for the week.  As for non-Paleo: I love carbs!  Bagels to be specific.  I could eat a bagel for every meal and be perfectly happy.

What advice would you give a potential new member?  Stick with it!  No one is good at CrossFit right when you start, but the more you do it, the better you get.  Dont be intimidated if you dont know how to do something or can’t handle the prescribed weight – do what you can and push yourself, you’ll be surprised what you are capable of!

What do you think of Rob’s beard?  It’s solid, but I think he’s caught somewhere between neat-bearded-broker, and burly-lumberjack.  Pick a side.

Tell us something we don’t know about you.  Singing is my guilty pleasure (mainly because I’m not all that good).  I took voice lessons once-upon-a-time, and have been looking at starting up again.

CONGRATS HILARY!!!

– you didn’t think we forgot about this little video did you?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN CROSSFITTING?
A little over two years now.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO JOIN CFS?
I was looking for something different that had a competitive nature to it. CFS has a proven program that works so I was all in after the first class.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT?
Squats have always been my favorite, however cleans are up there right now.

WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE MOVEMENT?
I would have to say Wall Balls.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT CFS?
The coaches know their stuff and are great at teaching. Everyone in class is very cool – they seem to migrate to CFS and make it a great place to workout. The New London competition last year was great and CFS was well represented – it was fun to compete with everyone helping each other.

MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT?
There have been so many (some good, some bad but all were memorable) – Just to name a few: Pulling Devin’s Range Rover in the parking lot; getting a 400lb Squat; the In House Team Competition where we had to do 2 rounds of sled pull and then a lap around the building – that terrible pain that would not go away; oh and the track workout where we decided to lunge 400m – I was injured for months. And of course the CFS Holiday Parties!!

WHAT ARE YOUR FITNESS GOALS 3 MONTHS & 1 YEAR FROM NOW?
3 months – improve training consistency and would like to do well in the Open. 1 year from now: stay healthy in 2012 (keep stretching regularly), Squat 2 1/2 x BW, bench press again with no pain, work more regulary on skills I need to be better at…Get to the CFS Holiday Party on time and stay until closing, which should be Rx.
