I founded CrossFit Stamford in February 2006 originally training in a tightly packed commercial gym with lots of machines. At the time we were the 50th CrossFit Gym worldwide, today there are about a million give or take.

Like most CrossFit owners I had played sports my whole life, been a very active person and felt like there was something missing after college. After a few years of corporate nonsense, it didn’t take long for me to figure out that this is not what I’m passionate about.

I started coaching football and ran the strength and conditioning program for Wilton High School for a couple of years. At the same time I was working as a trainer at the typical health club. Putting in hundreds of hours working with all kinds of clients and the high school kids prepared me for when I found CrossFit.

One year later I teamed up with Kristie and we opened up our own place, right across the street from that commercial gym. Then one day….I read a Men’s Journal article “Best Shape of Your Life in 20 min…” this how I found CrossFit. The workouts looked pretty short and different so I tried it out and…they ugh destroyed me. I thought I was in decent shape back then but I clearly was not in CrossFit shape. I started trying different WODs and never looked back. Fast forward a few months later and I decided to open CrossFit Stamford.

Over the next few years our community and CrossFit the organization continued to grow. In the summer of ’09 we moved again to a new facility twice the size. Finally in July 2011 we’ve moved into our permanent 8000 sq foot home complete with all the CrossFit bells and whistles.

It may seem a bit cheesy to someone outside of our community but at CFS it’s so much more than just “going to the gym”. The CFS community is supportive, encouraging, generous, dedicated, fun loving, and doesn’t take itself too serious. We’ve made life long friends here and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for CF Stamford!

I’ve been a personal trainer in Stamford for thirteen years.  I did traditional gym workouts and enjoyed introducing my clients to the world of fitness.  But as time progressed I got bored, there’s only so many hours that can be wiled away on an elliptical machine.  I also started looking more carefully at my body.  I was thin but lacked the muscle definition I thought I should have with all of the work I was putting in.  In addition, most of my clients invested in personal training to lose weight but one hour of moderate intensity training a few days a week couldn’t offset their poor diets.

Then Andy found CrossFit and we started doing the WODs together.  I felt so out of shape!  All that time spent on machines and light dumbbells had not prepared me for this program at all.  I quickly fell in love with the idea of making my workouts into “games”.  It was more fun, I was working harder and I had measurable results.  It felt a lot like playing on a sports team.  It wasn’t long before I brought my personal training clients on board.

Through scaling and modifications anyone can complete a CrossFit WOD.  But the workouts are just the tip of the iceberg.  CrossFit is the only exercise program I know of that incorporates total wellness. The knowledge I have gained regarding nutrition/flexibility/recovery is invaluable.  I’ve made healthy eating a large part of our program because I believe that we really are what we eat.  It’s important to me that my clients live a long and healthy life and coming to the gym is just part of the hard work that it takes to look and feel your best.

As our program has grown so has the community.  The best part about CrossFit Stamford is the friendships that are cultivated here.  We encourage and motivate each other to work harder than we thought possible and we spend time together at events in and outside of the gym.  CrossFit has given me a reason to train and I feel proud to say that I look and feel better than I did ten years ago.

I joined Crossfit Stamford in May of 2013 having just graduated from UMaine and finishing my D1 college swimming career. I have been a competitive swimmer and water polo player since the age of 8; I also played the traditional land sports, like soccer, baseball, basketball and volleyball.

At UMaine some of my teammates and I began using the Crossfit principles to work out. After a few weeks- I was hooked. I couldn’t wait to get back to CT and really see what Crossfit was all about. The first time I finished a workout at Crossfit Stamford, all sweaty, mentally and physically drained I looked past the clouds of chalk to see that there was this amazing supportive community of people cheering and helping each other push through their work outs. This is my favorite aspect of Crossfit. Not just the physical exertion it has on the body but also the mental stabilization you need in order to complete the workouts and that comes from the support you get in the gym. When you can become mentally strong you can grow, not only as an athlete but also as a person as well. The best part about CFS is that no matter how gritty the workout gets there is always someone cheering you on saying “you’ve got more in you.” When your teammates succeed, you succeed, we all, as a community succeed, and that is an incredible feeling.

I have been so fortunate to work with some of the best Crossfit coaches here at CFS. If there is anything that I can do to help people reach their Crossfit goals, as a coach, I will. I am currently working on that at Crossfit Stamford, in one of the best learning environments I have ever experienced.

truly cannot stress enough, how we are all products of our environment and that in some way, shape or form everyone is influenced by what is directly around them. That is why I can think of nothing more beneficial than surrounding yourself with healthy minds, active bodies, and positive attitudes on a regular basis. In that sense, CrossFit Stamford is a veritable goldmine.

I first walked into CrossFit Stamford a little over a year ago. I would be lying if I told you the transition was seamless. Being in the globo-gym mindset made it hard at first. I even relapsed a couple times, putting the headphones back on and being caught in isolation movements (yeah, I liked to still give the girls a curl every once and a while). Luckily the coaches caught me, humbled me but better yet educated me. I hate to say it, but in retro-spect, the globo-gym workout was a colossal waste of time.

Back to what makes the CrossFit experience so great and unique. It’s not a coincidence that the atmosphere in our gym is one of Fun, Teamwork, Support, and Camaraderie. We have great members who in turn foster a great culture. Disclaimer: it’s infectious and contagious and once you drink the “kool-aid” there’s no turning back. It’s this culture, community, and the fact that we never take ourselves too seriously to enjoy a good laugh every now and then, that makes CrossFit Stamford stand
apart (and keeps it member coming back for more workouts and more punishment on a regular basis).

While to some it may seem as though we are obsessed. I’m sure you’ve heard, “All that CrossFitters talk about is CrossFit and CrossFit ONLY!” However, to us the best part about CrossFit is that it really is not an end, in and of itself! It’s the gateway to our optimal performance both inside and outside of the gym!

Maybe I want to improve my volleyball game? To have the ability to get into a lower defensive stance (improved flexibility), to take a quicker first step (improved mobility) or to jump higher (greater power and speed) at the net; none of which can hurt. Or an awareness of the foods I eat and the direct correlation they have with how I feel and look. Or the increased confidence to take that leadership position at the office and know full well that I will get the job done. One of the most exiting parts of the CrossFit experience is discovering how interconnected it is with all things life.

For those of you still not buying that we do other things, jump into a class, introduce yourself to someone new. Like CrossFit, our members interests and passions are as broad and diverse as the workouts. We have the most robust group of professionals, recreationalists, and athletes. You’ll meet base jumpers, chefs, freestyle snowboarders, teachers, ultra-endurance athletes, law enforcement professionals, people who run with bulls for entertainment, just to name a few. Ultimately it’s this diverse community which makes CrossFit unique. And just remember, if you don’t have someone to do it with, it’s not worth doing.

I began Crossfit in April 2013. I was working out a lot before I started but never felt like I was accomplishing all of my goals. I started to do some kettle bells workouts on the side of just normal chest and triceps, back and biceps. It still was not enough. I talked to a good friend of mine and he said we should just join CFS and try it out.

As soon as I started I was addicted. It has changed my life drastically, not only has it changed my view of fitness but it has helped me with my everyday life. I believe in the lifestyle for myself and completely recommend it to anyone who is looking to take fitness to another level and feel great. I love to teach adults and kid’s everything I have learned so that they can reach their goals and look better and be part of a great community.

Before CrossFit, i considered myself to be in pretty good shape. I played sports throughout my life, and tried every type of workout imaginable (or so i thought). A friend introduced me to CrossFit, and i decided to give the CrossFit Stamford on ramp program a try in November of 2010. I was hooked from the very start!

The challenging and dynamic WODs appealed to my competitive spirit. Furthermore, i felt that the coaches truly cared about my overall progress, and even helped me learn new aspects of nutrition. CFS changed my life, and I was inspired to join the coaching team.

I received my level one certification in November of 2011, and haven’t looked back since! As an educator (i have been teaching in Stamford for over ten years) i possess an innate passion for teaching and love helping others reach their fitness goals.

I started my first On Ramp course at Crossfit Stamford in August of 2013, following my last baseball season at Western Connecticut State University. I played a lot of sports when I was in high school; I played football, baseball, and I ran track in the winter. Needing a new challenge, as well as becoming bored of the typical bodybuilding workouts, I thought Crossfit would be a great sport to get into.

I quickly fell in love with the whole Crossfit atmosphere. Not only could I not believe the results I was seeing, but the community was so awesome as well. I was excited to come back to Crossfit Stamford once I was done with school because it was another home away from home. I am excited to be joining such an amazing coaching staff and help other people accomplish their goals.

As a competitive collegiate Division I athlete, I’ve always been active. I grew up playing multiple sports and attended Green Mountain Valley School, a ski academy that included high intensity training and competition in the daily school curriculum. Fitness and workouts remained important to me beyond ski racing, but results were minimal. In 2009 a friend of mine introduced me to CrossFit style WODs at a local gym.

Eventually, they moved their programming to another friend’s garage and in 2011 they opened CrossFit Acadia. I fell in love with the community, camaraderie, intensity, and the results of CrossFit. I wish I had discovered CrossFit during my racing career!

My wife and our two boys moved to Connecticut from a small coastal town in Maine in the summer of 2012. It was not until I joined CrossFit Stamford that I started to feel a part of the type of community that we had left at CrossFit Acadia. CrossFit is not just a workout, it is a lifestyle!

During my ski racing career, I coached both dry-land and on-snow ski camps. Becoming a CrossFit Coach was a natural progression for me. I enjoy coaching and the opportunity to work with a broad spectrum of athletes, yet all show high levels of commitment and attitude every day in the box. I feel very lucky to be on the great coaching staff here at CrossFit Stamford.

I first heard of CrossFit was about 5 years ago from one of my best friends. He had always been into exercise but swore CrossFit was different. For him it was more about the personal challenges and successes rather than just showing off his muscles. At first I thought it was just going to be the next fad and would soon pass like many others. I saw him several months later and noticed a huge physical and mental change. Could he actually be onto something with this whole CrossFit thing? Fast forward several years and after being bored with the monotony of the gym I decided to finally give CrossFit a try.

I joined CrossFit Stamford in early 2012 eager to get my workout on. I was overwhelmed with the sense of community and camaraderie each member and coach showed. Working out became fun again. In dealing with the physical and mental challenges of CrossFit I’ve developed into a stronger and more confident person. It has taught me to deal with things one step at a time and appreciate the small victories in working towards my goals. I feel privileged to be a coach at CrossFit Stamford and am eager to share the life-changing benefits CrossFit has offered me. I look forward to helping others achieve their goals and set personal records they never thought possible.

I have been working as a fitness professional for nearly a decade and have been lucky enough to have practiced and worked in Europe, Asia and now North America.

Over that time I have run and managed:

  • Bootcamps, covering beginner to advanced levels of fitness
  • Sports teams
  • Small groups
  • Individuals
  • Crossfit classes

I have worked for a variety of organizations such as UFIT Singapore, ANZA Netball Sport Ready Netball Academy, Crossfit Bukit Timah as well as for myself. I am a great believer in fitness being open and accessible to all levels, from those embarking on their first steps towards a healthy lifestyle to those at the peak of their abilities. Being a mother of two teenage daughters I have a particular passion for working with young adults to ensure they learn what a healthy lifestyle means and that sets them up for being healthy and productive adults.

I have spoken about a healthy lifestyle, what do I mean? I see it as a balance between exercise and healthy eating, underpinned by the latest in science and knowledge. It should fun, challenging and one that comes with real physiological and psychological benefits.

With science and the latest knowledge being important to ensuring that I am able to give the best advice and direction to those that I train, I place great stock in learning. The qualifications listed below attest to that.

Throughout my life, I have always sought out new and inventive ways to stay active and maintain a well-balanced lifestyle. First off being a multi-sport athlete in both high school and college, primarily soccer and volleyball, I learned early on the value of the competitive spirit that I apply to all that I do today. I came across Crossfit in my third year of studying Architecture at Syracuse University. Previously, I, like many of my peers, was enamored with the workout routines of bodybuilders and power athletes alike. Amongst the machine based and mundane lifts I was doing at the time, I still remember the first Crossfit workout I ever did way back then and I realize now how pivotal that day was in my life.

Crossfit is very different in this way, I believe it gives us, as athletes, a new perspective on not just working out but our overall health and wellbeing as human beings. We want all of those individuals in our community to succeed not just in the gym but in their life. Crossfit brings together an eclectic group of people who all share the belief that we can all succeed together. Now, what your definition of success is is totally up to you. Whether it is doing your first ever pull-up, to running a marathon, to simply committing to a workout routine. This is what I love about it and why I keep coming back, the people who yell, cheer, scream and encourage me to be the best version of myself.

In my other life, I am an Architect in Greenwich, CT and I also enjoy hiking, photography and watching every superhero movie known to mankind. As a coach at Crossfit Stamford, I will strive to do all that I can to help the members of our community to achieve success in the gym and reach whatever goals we set together. For this is an ever-evolving journey, one that all of us at Crossfit Stamford are knowledgeable and most of all passionate about.

So come on get up and get over here and DO WORK!!
