Each month we nominate one person who exudes the attitude and work ethic of a true CrossFitter. This month we chose Bill because he is a leader, works well with all types of people, has developed skills through hard work and practice, and always has a smile on his face and kind words for new members. It’s having members/friends like Bill that reminds us why we opened this business in the first place.

How long have you been CrossFitting?
Just over 2 years.

Why did you join CrossFit Stamford?
I was attracted by CrossFit’s sense of purpose. CrossFit takes itself seriously, so it attracts people who are serious about living healthy lives. You are who you surround yourself with.

What is your favorite movement?
A good squat clean is always fun! I like most types of squats – goblet, front, back, wall balls, etc.

What is your least favorite movement?
The squat snatch. I have read that the squat snatch is the best movement for exposing your mobility limitations, so it actually has been a great teaching tool for me to see where I need to improve.

But in terms of what I always groan about, it has to be burpees.

What is the best thing about CrossFit Stamford?
The coaches are terrific, I have made friends here, and I feel welcome. There is a great sense of community, and the focus is not just on improving strength but on overall health and fitness.

Most memorable moment?
When Andy advised me that that my CrossFit attire was all wrong, that no one had worn white socks in 10 years and I needed to buy Reebok CrossFit shoes. Now I have proper black socks and CrossFit footwear and feel fashionable.

What are your fitness goals 3 months & 1 year from now?
3 month goal: get outside and to do some multi-sport adventures, such as combining cycling, kayaking and camping on one trip.

1-year goal: continuously work on improving my hip, t-spine and shoulders mobility, with the goal of doing a flawless squat snatch.

What are your favorite Paleo & non Paleo foods?
Root vegetables such as sweet potatoes, turnips, beets, etc. cooked by my wife.

Non-paleo: French fries, fruit pies, Guinness. Although I think cave people did drink Guinness.

What advice would you give a potential new member?
It takes time to understand all the movements, and there will be a fair amount of frustration along the way. Before CrossFit, I had never done Olympic lifts in my life, and was totally confused and a little intimidated when I started doing them in On Ramp. Just focus on your form, ask for help, and be patient. In 6 months you will be on your way.

A celebrity joins the gym, who do you hope it is and why?
Tom Brady, of course! The man is 39 years old and says he is going to play in the NFL until he is 45. I would like to observe his training program.

Tell us something we don’t know about you.
1. I have written 2 books currently available on Amazon Kindle, but you won’t want to buy them unless you need advice on managing your employees.
2. I have started taking guitar lessons, after last playing 30 years ago. (I still have the same guitar lol).
3. I secretly want to bicycle across the United States and finish on the Santa Monica Pier, LA.
4. I put myself through college, paying for it by working in the Maintenance Department at Giants Stadium. I respect hard work and people who do the jobs no one sees or wants to do.
5. I met my wife in grad school and we have been married 32 years.
